Understanding Pillow Block Bearings nomenclature: a comprehensive guide

Pillow Block Bearings, also known as mounted bearings or bearing housings, are crucial components in many mechanical systems. Understanding their nomenclature can help in selecting the right product for your application.

The image provided outlines a typical naming convention for Pillow Block Bearings. Let’s break down the components of this nomenclature to make it easier to understand.

Insert Bearing Types

The first part of the nomenclature identifies the type of insert bearing. Each type has specific characteristics suited for different applications:

  • HC: Eccentric locking collar
  • UC: Set screw
  • SA: Light duty eccentric
  • SB: Light duty set screw
  • CSA: SA with cylindrical OD
  • CSB: SB with cylindrical OD
  • ER: Cylindrical OD with snap ring and groove

In our example, “UC” indicates that the bearing has a set screw type of insert.

Housing Types

Next, the housing type is indicated. The housing provides the structural support for the bearing and can vary significantly:

  • P: Standard pillow block
  • PK: Low base pillow block
  • PX: Medium duty pillow block
  • F: Square four-bolt flange
  • FC: Piloted circle flange
  • FL: Oval two-bolt flange
  • FLU: Oval two-bolt flange – deep
  • FLX: Medium duty two-bolt flange
  • FU: Square four-bolt flange – deep
  • FX: Medium duty four-bolt flange
  • T: Take up unit
  • ST: Wide slot take up
  • LF: Light duty oval two-bolt flange
  • PA: Tapped base unit
  • PPL: Thermoplastic pillow block
  • PSS: Stainless steel pillow block
  • FLPL: Thermoplastic two-bolt flange
  • FLSS: Stainless steel two-bolt flange
  • FPL: Thermoplastic four-bolt flange
  • FSS: Stainless steel four-bolt flange

In our example, “P” indicates a standard pillow block housing.

Basic Series

The basic series number typically ranges between:

  • 201-215
  • X05-X15
  • 305-314

This number indicates the specific series of the bearing, which often corresponds to the bearing size and load capacity. In our example, “205” is the basic series number.

Shaft Size

The shaft size is indicated in sixteenths of an inch. If the size is given in millimeters, it is stated directly. In the example “16” means the bearing is designed for a shaft size of 16/16th inch, or 1 inch.

Additional Suffix

The suffix at the end of the nomenclature provides information about optional features:

  • R3: Triple lip seal
  • BO: Black oxide
  • SS: Stainless steel
  • K: Free spinning
  • T: Concentric collar

In our example, “R3” signifies that the bearing includes a triple lip seal.

Putting It All Together

Let’s break down the example code: UC P 205-16 R3

  • UC: Set screw type of insert bearing
  • P: Standard pillow block housing
  • 205: Basic series number
  • 16: Shaft size of 1 inch (16/16th inch)
  • R3: Triple lip seal

Understanding this nomenclature allows for accurate identification and specification of the required Pillow Block Bearing, ensuring that the right part is used for the job, thereby increasing efficiency and longevity of the mechanical system.

Whether you are a mechanical engineer, a maintenance technician, or simply a curious individual, mastering Pillow Block Bearings nomenclature is a valuable skill in the world of machinery and bearings.
